Senior Football: Our seniors travelled to Faughanvale on Sunday afternoon knowing that a win would seal the automatic promotion spot and a return to division one football for the 2015 season after a two year hiatus. Glen played with the advantage of the breeze in the opening half and soon got off the mark with a well taken Stevie O'Hara point. Faughanvale responded with a well taken score however Glen hit a purple patch with points from Michael Warnock, Ciaran McFaul and three points from Mark O'Donnell. Faughanvale scored a couple of pointed frees however Glen soon grabbed the only major of the game. Johnny Bradley won great possession in the middle of the park and after a great team move, Stevie O'Hara fired to the net. Ciaran McFaul then fired over a long range point to leave the half time score Glen 1-07 Faughanvale 0-04. The second period continued in a similar fashion to the first. Ciaran McFaul, Emmett Bradley and Michael Warnock scoring fine points. Faughanvale battled hard and grabbed a few points of their own. However going into the last twenty minutes Glen had a comfortable cushion and closed the game out with points from Conor Convery (2), Mark O'Donnell and Emmett Bradley. Final score Glen 1-14 Faughanvale 0-08. With one league game remaining, Glen have secured automatic promotion back to division one. Well done to the team and management and good luck in the championship.
Reserve Championship: The senior reserve panel travelled to Limavady last Thursday night in the first step of their bid to retain the intermediate reserve championship title. There was a bit of rustiness on show in the first half but despite some basic errors the lads kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely scoring 2-10 over the thirty minutes. The goals came courtesy of midfielder Tommy McCloy and a rasper of a strike from Marc Cudden. Points in that half came from Cahir McCabe, Marc Cudden, Conor Convery, Connlan Bradley and Ryan Bradley. Our six defenders were also totally on top and limited the hosts to just two points. Half time score: Glen 2-10 Limavady 0-02. The second half was more of what we have come to expect from this strong panel and despite Limavady getting two soft goals during the second thirty minutes our defence remained on
top and the attacking unit really took off scoring a further total of 4-14 - with two goals from Conor Convery, another from Marc Cudden and one from captain
Ryan 'Snowy' Bradley. Further points were registered by the usual suspects with substitutes Aodhan McGrath, Dominic Carville and Ben McGuckin also getting on the score sheet. A very good second half performance and the lads now progress to the quarter final stages. Full Time Score: Glen 6-24 Limavady 2-03.
Team & Scorers: Ciaran McCloy, Odhran Glass, Conor McDevitt, Conor Gallagher, Declan Brolly, Johnny Glass, Brendan O'Kane, Damien McKernan, Tommy McCloy (1-00), Ryan Bradley (1-04), Cahir McCabe (0-03), Marc Cudden (2-03), Paul Gunning, Connlan Bradley (0-05), Conor Convery (2-05). Subs: Dominic Carville (0-01) for Odhran Glass, Ryan Winton for Tommy McCloy, Aodhan McGrath (0-02) for Cahir McCabe, Ben McGuckin (0-01) for Declan Brolly, Colm Sargent for Brendan O'Kane, Kevin Brolly for Paul Gunning, Gerard McKenna, Blaine O'Donnell, Niall Mallon, Kevy McErlean. They will take on Greenlough in the quarter final on Wednesday 20th August, and will be away from home once again. All support appreciated.
Under 16 Championship: The Under 16's put in a great performance away to Greenlough in the first round of the championship on Thursday night. Having only won the corresponding league encounter by a point a tough game was anticipated. Just before the throw in the heavens opened which made conditions very tricky for both teams. Glen were dealt a further blow when Captain Aidan Hughes received a black card just a few minutes into the game. However Glen made light work of this setback in a great first half display to lead 9-4 to 1-1 at half time. The team also kept up the intensity levels for much of the second half to finish on a scoreline of 15-5 to 6-6. There were some outstanding individual displays but credit to all the players for a great effort in such difficult conditions. They now go forward to the next round in 2 weeks against Coleraine. Team: Caolan Convery, Caolan Bradley, Dylan McAleer, Caolan Wallace, Jack McGilligan, Aidan Hughes, Oran McGill, Tiernan McCusker, Niall Gallagher, Dara Higgins, Cathan Murray, Jack Gunning, Andrew Ferguson, Eunan Mulholland, Eoghan Young, Conleth McGuckin and James Convery
Camogie: The senior camogs took on Newbridge in what was the last league game of the season. A win would secure the league title. This proved to be a very disappointing performance by the girls with nothing going right for them on the day. Newbridge were on top all over the pitch and seemed much more intense and definitely more physical than the Glen girls. Newbridge went on to a comfortable victory on a scoreline of Glen 1-5 Newbridge 5-9. We meet Newbridge in the first round of the championship and the girls have a lot of work to do on the training pitch but no doubt with all players available for the game the result can be overturned. The league play-off is set for after the championship game.
We held our annual Under 8 & Under 10 tournament on Saturday. This turned out to be a very successful day with our Under 10 team beating Loup, Glenullin and Castledawson without conceding a single score. They were drawn against Kilrea who proved too strong for them and they went on to beat Bellaghy in the final. The Under 8 team were very unlucky not to reach the semifinal. They beat Castledawson but Bellaghy beat them by a single score to take the semifinal spot. Congratulations to Kilrea who beat Bellaghy in the Under 10 final and to Lavey who overcame Slaughtneil in the Under 8 final. All our young players were excellent and a credit to the club. Thanks to all who helped at the tournament, our referees, those who worked in the kitchen all day, to our team managers and the committee members who all helped our tournament run like clockwork. Thanks to all the teams that took part and the entry fees will be dominated to the respiratory ward of Antrim Area hospital in memory of our late president Elizabeth Convery who passed away during the year.
Well done to Meabh McGirr and Niamh Gallagher who were on the Derry under 16 team who defeated Dublin in the All-Ireland Under 16B semi-final. Derry will now play Waterford in the All Ireland Final on the 24th August. Well done girls
Scor Notice: Could anyone that is interested in competing in the 2015 Scor na nOg competition please text me on 07756400317, leaving your name and the category that what you would like to participate in. I would urge anyone within the club or surrounding area (who may not be a member and is also not a registered member to another club) who has any kind of talent should it be singing, dancing, drama or musical to consider taking part in this competition. Watty Graham's are the most successful club within the county when it comes to Scor and after the massive success we had last year with three entries in the Ulster Final of Scor na nOg and also three at the Scor Sinsear Ulster Final. Out of this we gained two Ulster titles one from each code and then the most prestigious award when Hannah Ferguson won the All Ireland .These medals at the various grades - Derry, Ulster and All Ireland are as equivalent to the medals won on the playing on the field, so it's a great accomplishment when you receive one. If interested, please contact me before 25th August. Many thanks Louise (Cultural Officer).
