Ballinderry opened their Derry SFC defence with a 1-17 to 0-5 drubbing of Newbridge yesterday.

Fabian Muldoon's charges, who are also the reigning Ulster club champions, led by 1-7 to 0-4 at half-time with Dermot McGuckin getting the goal. Conleith Gilligan and Collie Devlin shot 0-4 each as the Shamrocks - who can expect a sterner test from Coleraine in the next round - eased to victory.

Loup enjoyed the biggest win of the weekend, beating Steelstown by 3-18 to 0-4 with their goals coming from Ciaran Devlin, Michael McVey and Anthony O'Neill. Another of the fancied sides, Lavey, needed extra-time to get past Foreglen on a 2-11 to 0-11 scoreline, with Damien Shivers and Eamonn McGill hitting the net.

A fourth-minute Chris Bradley penalty proved decisive as Slaughtneil defeated Ballinascreen by 1-6 to 0-5. Ryan McElhinney's late free handed Dungiven a 0-13 to 1-9 extra-time win over Bellaghy, while Shane Heavern bagged a first half goal as Magherafelt cruised to a 1-13 to 0-4 win over Swatragh.
