St. Malachy's GAC Castledawson club news
July 28, 2014
The Committee, Players and Members of St Malachy's GAC deeply regret the death of Ann McKee wife of Tommy and mother of former players Colm and Ciaran (deceased) and extend our condolences to the entire family circle. May she rest in peace?
Camogie Championship: The Quarter Final of the U16 camogie championship was played in the Brough on Friday night past and Castledawson gained a well deserved win securing their position in the Semi Final stages next weekend. The girls worked hard throughout the game with great displays of skills from Megan Kearns, Aoife Brown and Anne McCoy. All the girls showed confidence and their passion for a victory came through after coming from behind to take the lead by 5 points at half time 2-10 to 3-02. The Glenullin team were very strong and both teams fought hard in the second half not making it easy for either to get scores. With a draw ten minutes into the second half both teams were trying hard to push out in front but with them both equally matched this proved difficult. The break came when Aoife Brown was pulled down just on the edge of the square and a penalty was awarded. As captain, Megan Kearns stepped up and hammered the back of the Glenullin net to give Casteldawson a lead once again. Glenullin continued to put the pressure on our defence but Rebecca Doyle and Bronagh Robinson kept their attempts from resulting into scores. The forwards continued to put the pressure on the Glenullin backline with Clare Kearns and Aoife Brown continuing to take some fantastic points. A truly passionate and determined performance on the night by the girls to win the game on a final score line of 4=16 to 5-03; good luck to them and their management team of Catherine McAteer and Peter Henry in the semi-final next Saturday, time and venue to be announced later.

The U-14 footballers had a comfortable victory in their first round championship match at Ballymaguigan last Tuesday evening, final score 2-11 to 0-07. In the quarter final they have a home fixture at the Broagh against Ardmore on this Tuesday the 29th with a 7:30pm throw in. Pass the word around and get the support out for these young lads
Senior Football: The team and management are putting in extra training in preparation for the championship, first round against Ogra Colmcille on this Thursday 31st at Ballymaguigan throw in 7:15pm as always need the support so pass around the word. These two teams met at Magherafelt in the first round last year and after a very even first half Castledawson ran out comfortable winners by ten points. The experienced Paul Heaney, Ciaran McCoy, Dara Shivers, Martin O'Kane and possibly Colm Lavery through injury may be missing for this year but the new kids on the panel in the Keenan brothers Aidan and Niall, Danny Devlin and Ordhan Mullan are slowly but surely finding their feet and will not go a wanting if this turns into a tough championship encounter.

The Platinum Award is the highest level of Club Maith Award accreditation and "is a special award which can be obtained only by outstanding, fully integrated, community-based GAA clubs. This is very prestigious accreditation and is huge recognition for the club and the effort that has gone in over the past number of years establishing our structures and governance.
