St Oliver Plunkett's GAC, Greenlough Club Notes

April 14, 2014
ACFL Div 2 Reserves: Faughanvale 1-14 Greenlough 1-06 (12/04/14) - Reserves suffer first league defeat in almost two years
Having won their first two games, Greenlough's Reserves hoped to continue their winning start to the league when they travelled to Faughanvale on Saturday 12th April.

However with two serious knee injuries in the first two games to John McCloy and Michael J Henry, and a further cruciate injury to Owen McAlynn in training during the week, who we wish well with his recovery, Greenlough struggled to field a team as they travelled to the North Derry venue.

The first half saw the home side start with a very strong wind at their backs, and they took the lead early on with two points. Greenlough responded with a goal through Christopher Maguire after a good team move up the field.

However Faughanvale hit back and pointed twice before finding the net. Whereas the home side then added further points before the break, Greenlough could only manage a pointed free through Christopher again, but should have been closer when he saw his penalty, awarded after a foul on Ruairi McGlinchey, saved by the keeper.

Greenlough had other chances, but struggled against the wind and ended up seven behind going into the break.
Half-Time: Faughanvale 1-08 Greenlough 1-01

With the wind at their backs Greenlough hoped to claw back the lead and had a couple of efforts early on drift wide. Faughanvale then tagged on a few points to move further ahead before Christopher Maguire hit two from play.

Greenlough tried to pick it up and were getting the ball up the field more than they had in the first half, but just couldn't find the scores. Two frees from Christopher Maguire closed the gap a bit, but the home side kept tagging on the points to keep well ahead.

As time ran out Ruairi McGlinchey completed Greenlough's scoring for the day, but despide battling hard for more scores, the St Oliver Plunkett's men couldn't prevent their first league game since July 2012 when they were defeated by eventual Division 1 Reserve champions Ballinderry.

U16 B1 League: Greenlough 4-03 Lissan 5-13 (10/04/14) - Under 16s get underage league action under way
Having been unable to field a team in 2013 at this level, Greenlough's Under 16s began their 2014 league campaign at home to Lissan on Thursday 10th April.

The visitors made the brighter start, but registered four wides before eventually opening the scoring in the fourth minute. A couple more wides were recorded for Lissan before their second point, this time from a free in the sixth minute, before Greenlough had their first meaningful attack a minute later, but only resulted in a wide.

Two more Lissan points by the tenth minute had them up by four, before Stephen Bradley eventually opened his side's scoring for the game and the year in the eleventh minut with a well taken point. Lissan responded immediately with a point, before the sides shared four wides between them.

With four between them Greenlough looked to be struggling to keep up with the visitors, but when Connor Mullan played the ball along the ground and beat the Lissan 'keeper at the near post, the home side gained some hope. Despite Lissan responding with a point straight away, Stephen Bradley then rifled the ball to the net to give Greenlough the lead for the first time in the game.

Unfortunately that lead was short lived, as within a minute the sides were level thanks to another Lissan point, and then within a further two minutes the gap was back to four, as the visitors first hit a goal and then pointed on the stroke of half time.
Half-Time: Greenlough 2-01 Lissan 1-08

After clawing back Lissan's lead just before the break, the second half started in the worst possible way for Greenlough, as the visitors hit two goals in the space of four minutes to suddenly open the gap to ten with twenty minutes remaining.

However, Greenlough hadn't given up, and when Shea McDonnell first battled through the Lissan defence to blast to the net, and then pointed while under pressure the gap was down to six, and then a minute later when Sean Kinoulty got his foot to the ball in a goal mouth scramble and poked it to the net, the gap was suddenly down to three.

Lissan responded with a point soon afterwards, but Paul Madden did likewise for Greenlough to keep the gap at a single score with just over ten minutes remaining.

Unfortunately again for the home side, that was as good as it got, and Paul's point would be Greenlough's final of the game. A point in the 14th minute of the half was the beginning of a scoring spree for Lissan, hitting two goals in thirty seconds a minute later, and then adding three more points in the final few minutes to confirm a comfortable victory.

First Under 10 Go Games blitz of 2014
Greenlough hosted the first Under 10 action of the year when Ballinderry and Desertmartin travelled to St Oliver Plunkett Park for the Go Games blitz on Saturday 12th April. The boys from P4, P5, P6 enjoyed their day where they all got plenty of football against their opponents. It was good to see so many parents and coaches out helping and encouraging the club's future Senior stars develop at this young age.
