Dublin keeper 2016

LOL ... I remember O'Leary went through a wobbly phase in 1989 / 1990 when he'd unnecessarily come running out off his goal line to catch a high Balls and the Meath lads would be queuing up to poison him with a shoulder into the chest like a harpoon. The football was way different back in the 80's and 90's though. O'Leary would kick the Ball out ( hoof the Ball out ) to huge Dublin midfielders. O'Leary was a great shot stopper.

It's mad when you think about it ,,, Since 1974 to 2016 (the past 40+ years) there has been 3 men in goal for Dublin .. Cullen / O'Leary / Cluxton ,, There's whole generations of players who have come and gone from the Dublin set up in these years and managers to. It has been basically 3 men who have manned the Goal for Dublin and Davy Byrne who was there for 3 years back in the late 90's.

Davy Byrne from Ballymun kept goal between O'Leary and Cluxton for maybe 3/4 seasons.

It was Byrne that kicked the ball out over the sideline in Thurles in 2001 prior to Mo Fitz's moment of magic! Cluxton had actually started some of the Leinster early rounds that year and been quite impressive. Byrne was brought back in for the Leinster Final and made a mistake for Meath's goal and then set up Maurice for his sideline ball in the quarters. It's mad to think but if Tom Carr had have kept faith with a young Cluxton then Maurice might never have gotten a chance to score one of the most memorable scores in history and we would not have had to wait until 2011 for our win over the Kingdom!

Jim Gavin was still playing for Dublin ,, when the young Cluxton came into the Dublin panel. I think I remember that Leinster final in 2001 ,, it was against Meath .. Dublin were obsessed with trying to double mark Ollie Murphy that day .. Meath won out on the day .. I remember Dublin missing a load of goal chances against Kerry in that 2001 match ,, Kerry were lucky to get the draw that day. Maurice Fitz kicking the side-line Ball over the bar from 60 yards out! ,, how many players is able to do that? Dublin lost a few of their great stalwarts ( warriors ) around that time Keith Barr was only 28 and Eamon Heery the edge of steel in the Dublin half-back line.

Davy Byrne was in goal that Leinster final in 2001, his fumble lead to Geragthy's first of two goals against us which was the difference in that game. I think Cluxton played against Longford or Offaly in the Leinster quarter or semi before? Did really well but made way for Byrne in the Leinster final.

He played both games and then Tommy Carr made the worst call of his managerial career by dropping Cluxton for Byrne for the Leinster final, hindsight is easy I know but he was so good in them two games I couldn't believe he went with Byrne.

I remember the Kerry goalie in 01 let in two soft goals to let Dublin back in 1 st day ( Murphy I think ). Dublin missed two sitters early in the replay - Moran and Farrell. Tommy Carr ran onto the pitch and ripped into the ref he quit after that missed out on a long ban.

Don't remember seeing Joe playing in Goals for the Dublin seniors? .. not senior championship anyways! Heffo played him out the field. O'Leary was number 1 keeper in 1983. ,, McNally had speed in his legs at that time and a football brain to go with it. I remember the soccer goal he scored against Cork in1983 ,, Joe let the Ball run through his feet and sent the keeper diving the wrong way buried the Ball in the back of the net . Like a ''' Lionel Messi ''' special and the Supporters invaded the pitch after he scored the goal.
