Cork captain Stephen Cronin believes it would be a mistake for the GAA to scrap the All-Ireland U21 football championship.

The competition is set to be replaced by an U20 grade in 2018 as a part of the Association's strategy to address player burn-out.

Cronin, who is currently gearing up for Saturday's All-Ireland final showdown with Mayo along with his team mates, says it will be disappointing to see the competition come to an end next year.

"I think the Under-21 grade along with the colleges football are two of the best competitions," Cronin told RTÉ Sport.

"They run at a very good time and to move it to summer seems to kind of put it on the back burner.

"It doesn't look like a big competition any more and I know for sure that there's a younger brother at home who's going to be put out by it. He's not going to get the full Under-21 grade out if it.

"People in Croke Park saw it as a thing that they need to change and we have to put it down as 'they know best'," he added.
