Profile:
Ray having served his apprenticeship with the late Paddy
Darkie Prendergast, rode as a professional
jockey for 10 years. After retiring as a jockey Ray worked
in France and America where he gained vast experience in
all aspects of the training ranks. Ray began training in
Donegal six years ago and was granted his trainers license
back then and is the only licensed public trainer in the
County of Donegal.
Success to date:
Having had numerous winners over the years the pinnacle
of Rays many successes was when one of the horse he
was training INCLINE
win the Tote Galway Mile valued at €160,000 the richest
handicap in Europe, which incidentally was purchased by
Ray for a mere 8,000 Guineas at the Newmarket Sales and
to date has win in excess of €150,000 for his owner.
The winning of this prestige race was a first by any Donegal
Trainer and the monumental achievement was the cause of
elaborate discussion by RTEs Ted Walsh and Robert
Hall on the success of Rays training ability having
won the feature race.
Since his success at Galway it was no surprise to read in
the Irish Field Mc Elligotts,s top five flat race achievements
for 2007 when he headlined Mc Glinchey strikes
blow for small trainers and indeed it was a
great achievement.
Facilities
Gallops
All Rays horses are trained at Murvagh beach, set
in the picturesque area of Donegal with the Bluestack Mountain
in the back ground, the beach is approximately 12 furlongs
in length. The horses having finished there workout are
always more relaxed than horses trained on the normal gallops
and seem to look forward to the facility of walking in the
salt water for a period after words to cool down which helps
to alleviate potential leg problems.
Stables
The 20 number stables are all of the most modern design
and when being constructed the health and safety of the
horse was the most critical factor.
Horse Walker
Our horse walker again is off the latest design and is used
daily.
Paddocks
The Turnout paddocks adjacent to the stables and horse walker
are a necessary asset.
Sand Arena
Since installing the floodlit sand arena it has proven to
be of the utmost benefit in the breaking and schooling of
young stock and like the walker is kept in constant use.
All Rays young horses go through an intense course
in Dressage this helps to develop the horses overall
confirmation.
Syndicate
Syndicates are an ever increasing phenomenon and are an
economical way of becoming a race horse owner that offers
a great fun factor and is advantages
in building friendships.
The potential syndicate members share all costs involved
in purchasing, training, veterinary, and other miscellaneous
outgoings concerned with their horse.
The chances of success are greatly increased when you are
a part owner in a number of horses other than having a single
ownership.
