Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald has revealed that doctors told him to "stay calm" during yesterday's All-Ireland SHC quarter-final against Galway.

Fitzgerald required minor heart surgery last week and was given the all clear to patrol the sidelines at Semple Stadium, where his side eventually fell to a 2-17 to 0-17 defeat at the hands of the Tribesmen.

Speaking after the game, the Clare boss stated that he hadn't known that there were Order of Malta medics nearby.

"I didn't even know they were there," Fitzgerald is quoted as saying in today's Irish Daily Star.

"Listen, it's grand, I was out there, got through it, thanks to be God. There was a point during the week when I'd have given anything to be out there.

"Dr John Clarke in Galway and Dr Niall (Mulvihill) said, 'if you really want to, you can'. He said 'stay calm'. Sure that was never going to happen anyhow!"
