Clare midfielder Gary Brennan admits that he has been thinking about Sunday's National League Division 3 opener against Sligo for some time.

With all the early season competitions out of the way now, attention turns to the start of the National League this weekend.

The Banner host fellow promotion hopefuls Sligo at Miltown Malbay on Sunday and Brennan stressed to the Clare Champion that they need to hit the ground running.

"Once you come into the New Year, the McGrath Cup games shortened the gap to the start of the league. It's a date that has been in our thoughts for a while and it's good to be in the week of the game at this stage," said Brennan.

"Management will have been happy to have had the three games, in that it gave them the opportunity to see players. We'd be hoping that the competition will have brought us up to match pace, more so than if we didn't have those games. It was effective in that we got a couple of good games out of it."
