Brian Lohan doesn't regret calling for a review of the Clare senior hurling set-up last month, despite the 'upset' it has caused to some people.

In the wake of another early championship exit at the hands of Cork, the 1995 and '97 All-Ireland winning full back called for the establishment of an independent committee, which would be chaired by Ger Loughnane, to look into the performances of the team and manager Davy Fitzgerald over the past two years.

The Wolfe Tones clubman also criticised Clare chairman Michael McDonagh for not letting clubs have their say on Fitzgerald's future as manager.

"I called for two things really; number one was that there should be a review of where Clare hurling is at the moment and the second thing was that it should be an independent review, that someone from outside the county board should do it," Lohan said on Clare FM.

"It upset a couple of people, but I would stand by it. I think it's needed, particularly with the way results have gone over the last two years.

"I suppose at the end of the day it will be the county board that will decide on this. I don't think the clubs will be able to make the decision themselves. It'll have to be driven by the county board.

"I do think it's needed. I do think there was a huge amount of controversy that I don't really want to go into over the last year and that needs to be addressed."

The UL Fitzgibbon Cup winning manager added: "There's no doubting the quality that's there, just really great players in Clare. They're the envy of hurlers all over the country. We have a couple of them inside in UL, just brilliant hurlers. But the last two years have been very disappointing, there's no getting away from that."
