Clare's hopes of retaining their Division 1A status have been dealt a double blow after Colm Galvin and Conor McGrath both sustained hamstring injuries in the defeat to Kilkenny.

The teams will meet again in the relegation playoff next Sunday and it looks as though Galvin - who is expected to spend the summer in Boston - and McGrath will be missing for the Banner after they were both forced to retire in the closing stages of today's 2-19 to 2-20 loss at Nowlan Park.

Brendan Bugler will also miss the crucial encounter due to suspension, while fellow defender Patrick O'Connor is currently injured.

Speaking on RTE Radio's Sunday Sport this afternoon, former Waterford star John Mullane called on Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald to bring dual star Podge Collins - who is concentrating on football this season - back into the fold.

For their part, Kilkenny could be without Jackie Tyrrell, who was also injured in the latter stages. On the plus side, most - if not all - of the Ballyhale Shamrocks contingent are expected to return for next weekend's showdown.
