Davy Fitz calls for Fitzgibbon Cup deferral

Davy Fitzgerald is asking for this weekend's Fitzgibbon Cup to be suspended to allow his players time to recover from their bruising quarter-final.

The semi-finals are due to take place in Limerick IT tomorrow afternoon, followed by the final on Saturday but LIT boss Fitzgerald says they should be postponed.

The Clare manager's charges came through a gruelling quarter-final win over IT Carlow on Tuesday and he says they will not be ready to take on UL in Friday's all-Limerick semi:

"You see what that knocked out of our bodies - we weren't able to walk after it. To expect us to go out again is going to be a big ask," he says in The Limerick Leader.

"I'd encourage them to see common sense. We're always going on about player welfare and hopefully they can look at it.

"I don't think we'd have a chance if we played again on Friday. UL will have had no game for a week and half. It's a very big ask.

"For me it should be about the players - LIT will host it any time they want. I'm sure UL would want to play us and beat us when we're fresh."
