Cavan man takes Ulster presidency
February 28, 2004
Drumalee GFC clubman Michael Greenan was elected president of Ulster Council at the provincial body's annual convention in the Manor House Hotel in Enniskillen on Saturday February 28th.
This is only the sixth time in the 101-year history of provincial council that a Cavan man has been elected president. The former county council officer was elected unopposed in succession to John O'Reilly from Armagh.
The popular Cavan man's election is a huge honour for the Breffni County and Drumgoon's Aogan Farrell made it a memorable double when he was elected Ulster Council treasurer, defeating Paul Dorris from Tyrone by 62 votes to 11 - the widest ever margin recorded in an Ulster Council election. Farrell is the third Cavan man to hold the post of treasurer.
Speaking shortly after his election, the new president expressed his delight at being chosen to follow in the footsteps of fellow countymen Bernard Fay, Seamus Gilheaney, Andy O'Brien, Philip Smith and Fr Dan Gallogly.
"I can assure you that I intend to give it my best shot and to do all I can to ensure that this historic province continues to give a lead to our association in many areas - playing, coaching, refereeing, developing etc.," Greenan promised.
For the 54-year-old, who boasts a wealth of experience at all levels within the Association, the appointment marks the culmination of a 40-year journey that began when he became assistant secretary of Drumalee at the age of 14. Within ten years, he was assistant secretary of Cavan County Board. Michael was elected county secretary in 1976 and has been active on Ulster Council for 20 years.
Upon his election, the former Cavan footballer (who won Ulster SFCs in 1967 and '69) and intercounty referee immediately set up a new committee - the Club Development Work Group (under the chairmanship of Dan McCartan), which will advise clubs embarking on development work.
The Breffni County is honoured to see Michael Greenan and Aogan Farrell elevated to such lofty positions within the GAA and we're sure that both men will continue to do us proud.
