County League Finals

The two league finals were played in Cusack Park last Saturday afternoon.  Thankfully the rain kept away and supporters were treated to two good close games of camogie.

Division 2 Final
The opening game was the Division 2 final between Crookedwood and Delvin.  Crookedwood opened the scoring with an Aisling Boyhan free after 6 minutes.  This was followed by points from Julie McLoughlin (2) and Sabina McLoughlin to leave them 4 points up after 15 minutes.  Sarah King converted a free after 16 minutes for Delvin's first score but this was negated a minute later when Aisling Boyhan converted her second free.  King pointed another free after 22 minutes and then a minute later scored the game's first goal to leave it all even at 1-02 to 0-05.  Boyhan and King both added two more points each before halftime to leave it all level at the break 1-04 to 0-07.

Delvin went ahead for the first time at the beginning of the second half courtesy of a Triona O'Shaughnessy point.  Boyhan converted her fifth point to bring the sides level for the third time before two King points put Delvin two points up after 40 minutes. Ailish Greene raised the green flag for Crookedwood after 42 minutes to put the winners one point ahead but it was all square a minute later following a Karen Gaffney point.  Antoinette Savage and Sarah King traded points to again level it and it looked like a draw could well be on the cards.  However, in the last ten minutes Julie McLoughlin went on a scoring spree, scoring 1-04 without reply and this proved to be the difference between the teams.  Final Score Delvin 1-09 Crookedwood 2-13.  After the game Cathaoirleach Olive Leonard presented the Division 2 Shield to winning captain Julie McLoughlin.  Referee Richie Heffernan.

Division 1 Final
The Division 1 Final proved to be just as competitive as the first game with the outcome in the balance until the final whistle.  Nadia Grace got the Gaels off to an early start with a point after two minutes but a minute later Aoife Corcoran pointed her first free to level it.  Grace  (a '45) and Corcoran (free) traded points to leave it 0-2 apiece after twelve minutes before a Corcoran free after 14 minutes put Castletown ahead for the first time.  This lead was shortlived as Sheila Devine scored the games first goal three minutes later to leave the Gaels two points up for the next five minutes.  Mairead McCormack put the winners one ahead after 22 minutes when she raised the green flag but the Gaels responded with a Nadina Grace goal within a minute.  McCormack pulled one back with a couple of minutes left to leave the half time score Lough Lene Gaels 2-02 Castletown Geoghegan 1-04.

Following the break the Gaels extended their lead to three points courtesy of points from Joanne Walsh and Sheila Devine but ten minutes into the second half an Aoife Corcoran free found its way straight into the net to level matters for the third time.  Caoimhe McCrossan got her name on the scoresheet a couple of minutes later to go one ahead but a point from Sarah Jackson left the score at 2-05 apiece and it was starting to look like it wasn't going to be possible to separate the teams.  Mairead McCormack and Aoife Corcoran (a free) added to their tally before Janette McCormack pointed for the Gaels with a minute left on the clock.  It was Castletown captain, Joanne McCormack, who finished the scoring with an injury time point to leave the final score Lough Lene Gaels 2-06 Castletown Geoghegan 2-08.  Joanne was presented with the Divsion 1 shield by Cathaoirleach Olive Leonard who congratulated Castletown on capturing the Division 1 title having gained promotion this year following their Division 2 win last year.  Referee: Ken Gunning.
