Tara Camogie 7s - eight years running

April 07, 2015

On 26th April 2006 Tara held their first Camogie 7s Tournament to commemorate the club's 20th Anniversary.  Many of the original Tara players travelled to London to join the celebrations, including Presidents Carmel & Majella O'Neill.  With both cup and plate competitions at Junior and Senior grade, 31 camogie games were played in a single day.  Celebrations followed through the night with a band and a disco inside in the Tir Chonaill Gaels Clubhouse.  The tournament has since become an annual event, and eight years on the Tara Camogie 7s is still going strong.

Visitors from home have included; Borrisoleigh, Holycross, St Cronans, Roscrea, Shannon Rovers (Tipperary), Ballindereen, Craughwell, Killimor (Galway), Castletara (Cavan), Liverpool Hope, CBC Kevins, Clanna Gael Fontenoy, Craobh Chiarain, Na Fianna, Portobello, Round Towers (all Dublin), Na Magha (Derry City), St Johns Belfast, St Marys Antrim, Tullamore (Offaly), Kilkishen, Whitegate (Clare) as well as all London and Birmingham clubs also taking part.

Holycross/Ballycahill have participated in 5 out of the 8 years and had a bit of a monopoly for the first two winning both the Getjar Senior Cup and Siobhan Ryan's Senior Player of the Tournament award. Fr Murphys ended Ballycahill's dominance and were the first London club to win the Senior competition.  The Cup then went to Shannon Rovers, Portobello and Ballinderren before hosts Tara finally got their hands on it in 2013 and 2014; both years doing the double by winning both the Junior & Senior cups.

The senior cup finals have proved to be tight affairs of the highest standard, whilst the Senior Player of the Tournament Award has been awarded to players of immense talent.  Tara's own Angela Kenneally lined out for Kilkenny, Siobhan Ryan & Noreen Flanagan for Tipperary, Liz Ruth for Wexford and Moira Dooley for Limerick.  It's such a pleasure to have this quality of player compete at Greenford.  The Junior competition was always tough and competitive also, with Green Isles and Tara both collecting 5 pieces of Finals silverware out of the eight competitions.

We are delighted that Getjar have sponsored the Senior Cup and Senior Player Awards since 2006, after having sponsored Tara back in the early 80's.  Without them we wouldn't be able to host such a fantastic event that is enjoyed so much by both London & visiting teams and players alike.  We would also like to thank Cara Personnel & The Galway Association of Galway Association of London who have been generous contributors.

Tara's next Camogie 7s will take place on Saturday 11th April 2015. Registration starts at 10 am. The Tara girls will be looking to retain both senior and  junior titles. Please come and show your support on what promises to be a great day of Camogie. There will be entertainment in the club house after.
