Granagh Ballingarry 2-7 Killeedy 1-3

Granagh Ballingarry retained their Senior Camogie Championship title with a 2-7 to 1-3 win over Killeedy in Ballyagran on Sunday. The match played in wet and windy conditions was nonetheless an enthralling encounter with no quarter given between these two teams who have been great rivals over recent years.

Playing against the wind it was Granagh Ballingarry who opened the scoring with a free from Aoife Sheehan in the first minute. Killeedy however responded in style when Aisling Scanlon bore down on goal and finished emphatically to the back of the net to take the lead.

The two sides exchanged frees and Donna Mulcahy scored from play to give Killeedy a 1-2 to 0-2 lead going into the second quarter. However Granagh Ballingarry levelled through an Aoife Sheehan free on 19 minutes that dropped in under the bar as the Killeedy failed to deal with the ball.

Sarah Carey put Granagh ahead a minute later with an excellent after a trademark break from defence. Killeedy levelled thriough a Michelle Casey free however the decisive score came just before the break as Rebecca Noonan struck the back of the net in injury time to leave the score at the break Granagh Ballingarry 2-3 Killeedy 1-3.

Though they were now playing against a significant breeze Killeedy were to keep Granagh scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the second half. They were unable to add to their own tally though. Killeedy's best chance came when the ever dangerous Aisling Scanlon broke through on goal but she delayed her shot eventually passing to Michelle Casey who was bottled up by the Granagh defence who cleared.

Mairead Fitzgerald (15 minutes) and Vera Sheehan (23 minutes) scored from play to widen Granagh's lead and Player-of-the Match Aoife Sheehan converted two frees in the dying minutes of the game to leave the score at the final whistle Granagh Ballingarry 2-7 Killeedy 1-3.

Captain Sarah Carey and Vice-Captain Lisa Kelly were presented with the Championship Trophies by County Board Chairperson Sean Condon to the delight of their supporters. They will however be putting their celebrations on hold as they have a Munster Senior Semi-Final clash with Tipperary Champions Burgess Duharra to prepare for this Saturday.
