Camogie: Mixed fortunes for Kilmessan

August 12, 2014

Kilmessan's Katie Ni Choileain
Kilmessan Camogiers had mixed fortunes in the last week with the intermediate side suffering two defeats to Kildalkey and Dunderry, however a combined senior and intermediate squad successfully captured the Dublin Summer Cup Div 1 title for the first time after overcoming a strong Lucan side in Crumlin last Thurs evening

Meath Intermediate Championship played @ Drumree Tues 5th August
Half time score: Kilmessan 2-3 Kildalkey 0-9
Full time score: Kilmessan 2-5 Kildalkey 2-10

Despite leading by a point at half time, Kildalkey proved too strong for Kilmessan's second team towards the end of the second half where they scored 2-1 without reply in the last ten minutes.
The experience of county star Aine Keogh proved to be the major difference between the two teams and her strong running through the Kilmessan defence caused problems throughout.
Kilmessan tried very hard and had some excellent performances from Caitriona Bolger in goals, Chrisitne Grimes and Mary Ellen Sheridan in defence and Karen Ward and Sarah Ross in attack, however they lacked enough composure in front of goals to close out the victory when they had their noses in front and fatigue in the last ten minutes cost them dearly.

Kilmessan team and scorers; C. Bolger, M. Montague, C. Grimes, C. O'Donoghue, ME Sheridan, B. Dennehy, A. Sheridan, H. King, K. Clynch, L. Gorman, K. Ward (0-1), O. Doyle, N. Costello, A. McLOughlin (1-0), S. Ross (1-4)
Subs: C. Donoghue for C. O'Donoghue, L. Mc Loughlin for N. Costello, A. Duffy for L. Gorman.

Dublin Summer Cup Div 1 Final played @ Crumlin Thurs 7th August
Half time score: Kilmessan 4-6 Lucan Sarsfields 2-5
Full time score: Kilmessan 6-15 Lucan Sarsfields 3-7

Kilmessan camogie team earned a notable piece of silverware when they captured the Dublin Summer Cup Div 1 title for the first time in the clubs history.
Kilmessan have entered this competition for the past three years and after winning the Division 3 title three were moved up to division 1 last year where they failed to progress from their group but after some narrow defeats to top Dublin sides, they knew with a bit more work they could make progress in 2014.

Kilmessan gained entry into the final after successfully defeating Erin's Isle, St. Oliver Pluinketts, Crumlin & St. Vincents.

The final started off at lightning pace and Lucan were first to score, however Kilmessan soon settled and full forward Katie Ni Choileain was in devastating form and looked lethal any time she gained possession scoring 4-1 from play in the opening half. Lucan got two goals of their own along with another pint from play and three frees to leave their score at 2-5, Kilmessan's other points came from Frances Lynch (0-1), who along with Stephanie Horan were starting to dominate the midfield exchanges, Aileen Donnelly (0-2) and Megan Thynne (0-1) to leave Kilmessan with a half time lead of seven points.
Despite the loss of Ni Choileain at half time, Kilmessan pushed on scoring an impressive 2-9 second half tally with 2-8 of that from play. As Lucan were forced to bring a sweeper back to cover Kilmessan's fast full forward line, the Kilmessan girls started to pop over points from all angles the two most impressive from teenager Nadine Doyle to struck over from 30 yards off her stick after a piercing solo run and a kicked Kelly Gorman effort from a very tight angle. Indeed Gorman pushed Ni Choileain for scoring honours, with an impressive 2-5 from play.
Kilmessan will be disappointed with the concession of Lucan's third goal as it came off a defence error of miscommunication from a goalmouth scramble.
Overall this was an excellent team performance and a noteworthy one from a Meath Camogie perspective.

Kilmessan team and scorers; A. Carroll, M. Horan, C. O'Leary, J. Smyth, M. O'Leary, A. Lynch (Capt), D. Fitzgerald, S. Horan, F. Lynch (0-2), M. Ni Choileain, a. Donnelly (0-4, 0-1f), N. Doyle (0-1), K. Gorman (2-5), K. Ni Choileain (4-1), M. Thynne (0-2)
Subs: A. Gorman for K. Ni Choileain, N. Sheridan for J. Smyth, O. Doyle for K. Gorman.

Meath Intermediate Championship played @ Dunderry Monday 11th August
Half time score: Kilmessan 1-1 Dunderry 5-6
Full time score: Kilmessan 6-4 Dunderry 8-9

Kilmessan's intermediate side ended their first round of championship game sin disappointing fashion when they failed to produce a good performance over a young Dunderry side last Monday evening.
The concession of five goals in the opening half left them with too much of a hill to climb in the second period and despite the best efforts of captain Christine Grimes, Mary Ellen Sheridan, Orla Doyle and Ashling Mc Loughlin, the gap at the final whistle was a disappointing eleven points.

Kilmessan team and scorers; C. Bolger, L. McLoughlin, C. Grimes, C. Donoghue, A. Sheridan, M. Montague, ME Sheridan, K. Ward, K. Clynch, O. Doyle, S. Ross, L. Gorman, C. Sheridan, A. McLoughlin, N. Costello.
Subs: C. O'Donoghue, A. Duffy, E. Watters, G. Managan.

Kilmessan will need to pick themselves up from this defeat as they face into second round ties with Navan, Boardsmill, Kildalkey and Dunderry again.
