Senior Camogie Championship
St. Anne's V St. Kevin's, Friday 18th July 2014
St. Anne's 2-7
St. Kevin's 2-7

St. Kevin's and St. Anne's played out a close encounter in the first round of the 2014 senior championship in Philipstown.

There was no separating these two "2013 Championship Finalists". While it must be said that, the Camogie was not of championship standard, however the excitement did not disappoint. St. Anne's took the lead courtesy of a Siobhan Dawdry point but Shauna Brennan quickly replied a goal for the homesiders followed by a point from Aoife Gregory. St. Anne's added points each from Siobhan Dawdry, Catriona Cantwell and Denise Moynagh to leave the half score, St. Anne's 0-4, St. Kevin's 1-1.

St. Kevin's started the second half with dominance and had a four point advantage within ten minutes of the restart. With conditions deteriorating due to a dense fog, the signs were looking good for the Philipstown girls. St. Anne's fought back and a fortuitous goal from Linda Woods put the game back in the melting pot. It was end to end stuff for the remainder of the match as both sides traded scores. With minutes on the clock, St. Anne's took the lead by one point but a 13 metre free awarded to St. Kevin's drew the match. There was one last gasp from St. Anne's which resulted in a 65 metre free but with visibility obscured due to the worsening fog it was no wonder that the strike was off target and indeed it was relief for all when the referee blew the final whistle.

St. Kevin's probably gave the better team performance on the night and could consider themselves unlucky with a draw. On the other side of the coin, St. Anne's under-performed on this occasion, but still managed to claim a share in the spoils. Both teams will need plenty of tweaking to progress further in this years championship.

There were some fine individual performances on both teams, on the Philipstown side, Eleanor Smyths' strength and Aoife Gregory's pace deserve a mention. On the Togher side of things, St. Anne's were driven by the inspirational centre field player Catriona Cantwell and centre forward Siobhan Dawdry, both players giving a powerful display.
