Byrne to make AFL return after year-long absence

Former Louth footballer Ciaran Byrne is set to make his AFL return this weekend after being named in Carlton's team to face Gold Coast Suns on Saturday.

Byrne, who signed a rookie contract with Carlton in 2013, had his 2015 campaign wrecked by a hamstring injury he picked in training last April, just days after making his AFL debut.

The 21-year-old featured prominently for the Blues in pre-season, scoring a wonder goal against affiliate club the Northern Blues. 

He comes into the team for this weekend's showdown against the Gold Coast Suns along with fellow Irish man and former Laois star Zach Tuohy, who recently made his 100th appearance for the club,
