Monaghan midfielder Kieran Hughes says it took a couple of days for him and his team mates to grasp just how much they "under-performed" against Dublin last weekend.

The Farney men went down to the All-Ireland champions on an emphatic 1-19 to 0-12 score-line in the second of last Saturday's quarter-finals at Croke Park and speaking to Newstalk's Off The Ball programme yesterday, Hughes described the loss as "gut-wrenching".

"It was a tough week to be honest - it only probably settled in on the Thursday what really happened," said the Scotstown clubman.

"I suppose after you lose a championship game the only thing to do is go and take a binge of stuff and that's what the whole lot of us did.

"It took the couple of days to realise how much we under-performed. It was gut-wrenching but every team has to drop out at some stage. We just take it on the chin and we'll move on about our business.

"Again it was very, very difficult to get a hold of not performing as we should have. We would have fancied ourselves to put it up to them a bit better."
