Roundwood was stunned by the tragic death of popular local sportsman George Johnson. The 41-year-old was crossing Roundwood's Main street when he was struck by a car. He was taken to Loughlinstown Hospital, where he died at 11.20pm. The driver of the car which struck Mr. Johnson was arrested at the scene for suspected drink driving. He is understood to be a man local to the Roundwood area. He was later charged by the Gardai and released on station bail to appear before Wicklow District Court on November 20. Roundwood's Main Street remained shut off until lunch time on Monday, with diversions in place as Garda investigators examined the scene of the accident. Mr Johnson was particularly well known in Wicklow sporting circles. Born and bred in Wicklow town, the keen hurler and footballer, represented both St Patrick's GAA club and his county at various levels from underage to senior. He won several honours with St. Pat's as well, starting off with Under-16 Hurling Championship in 1981. The crafty forward also helped St.Pat's to land two senior hurling championships in 1990 and 1992. He was also a talented soccer player and played locally while living in wicklow town. A roofer by trade, Mr. Johnson moved to Roundwood a number of years ago and continued his love of sports by coaching for Red Bank United FC. He lived in Roundwood and his partner Imelda and was the son of the late Wally and Sadie Johnson. He is survived by his brothers and sisters Wally, James, Jack, Sadie, Margaret and Ann. He also had a late brother called Danny. Courtesy of the Wicklow People. 8 November, 2007
