Brophy, Jim

The late Jim Brophy There was widespread sadness in Dunlavin following the death of James (Jim) Brophy. Jim, who was 83, had been ill for a number of months and will be remembered as a keen sportsman. He was the last remaining member of the jubilant Junior Championship team of 1945 and played a part that year in the team that had to play Rathdangan three times before there was a winner. He was guest of honour at the official opening of the new GAA grounds in Dunlavin in April 2005, and was honoured to receive a specially commissioned medal from the then President of the GAA, Sean Kelly. Jim was also an accomplished handball player who offered plenty of advice and support to young players. As the last family member of his generation, Jim is sadly missed by his nieces, nephews and many relatives and friends. A guard of honour was provided by the GAA at his removal to St Nicholas of Myra Church and jim was laid to rest in the local cemetery following 11am mass. Courtesy of The Wicklow People 21/09/2006
