Rooney, Michael

August 24, 2006
The Late Micheal Rooney The passing of Micheal Rooney has left a big void in the lives of his many friends, family and neighbours. He was born in Roundwood on March 1 1922 to Micheal and Elizabeth Rooney and had two brothers, Ned and Billy, and a sister Mai. He worked in Wicklow County Council as an overseer in the machinery where his generous nature was really appreciated. He also served in the prestigious post of Chief Fire Officer in the county for a number of years. In 1959 he married the love of his life, Wicklow town girl Tina O' Neill, and settled in Wicklow. He had a long sporting career in football and had an association with Roundwood, Ballinasloe, Laragh and Rathnew. He also holds a Dublin Championship medal with St. Mary's Sandyford. He wont be forgotten in the village of Rathnew for his dedicated service to the local GAA club. His passing is another link gone with the powerful Rathnew teams of the 40's. He was a member of the famous team that won the Senior Championship in 1941, 1942 and 1943. In the latter years his generous contribution annually was very much appreciated by Rathnew GAA club. And one of his big social events of the year was his attendance at the annual dinner dance. The event will be all the sadder without his presence. He also returned to help Roundwood defeat Blessington in a junior football final in 1950. Fire officers from the county and the Rathnew Club formed a guard of honour as his remains were removed from his residence to the Church in Wicklow where one of his former Rathnew playing colleagues, Fr. Dermot Kavanagh gave a homily. Courtesy of the Wicklow People 24/08/06
