Michael was respected teacher and publican Michael Nagle, Avoca House, Avoca, who died at the age of 63 years, was a highly respected teacher and a publican during his life. As he had not been feeling well on Wednesday last week, his wife Margaret, a qualified nurse, was taking him to the doctor when he died in the care on the way. Michael was a native of Kildysart, Co. Clare, but spent most of his adult life working and living in North Wexford and Couth Wicklow. He taught accountancy in the Vocational School in Gorey from 1960s and was also a teacher in the new Gorey Community School for a few years before he retired. In 1971 he met his future wife when he was as on a working holiday in New York where Margaret Bury, a native of Conary Lower, was working as a nurse. They married the following year and then together they reared one son John. They moved from Gorey to Courtown in the 1970s and ran a guest house business before they bought the Holiday Inn pub in 1977, and they ran that pub until 1989. Michael continued teaching. In the 1990s he bought the Avoca Inn pub which he ran with the help and support of his devoted wife Margaret. He played football during his school days and was the holder of an AA-Ireland Colleges medal. He was a great supporter of Clare trams, particularly hurling, and because he attended university in Dublin was also a fan of "The Dubs" in football. All three members of the family were on the one side when Manchester United were playing, cheering on Roy Keane and his team-mates. Michael Nagle was gifted with his academic brain. Wood-turning, plumbing and such like were no bother to Michael who was also a skillful golfer and was known to be a big hitter. He started the Avoca Inn golf society after he came to Avoca, an area that he fell in love with after he arrived here. A good natured person, Michael Nagle helped many a person in their hour of need and many of his kindly acts were known only to himself and the beneficiaries. He had a great sense of humour and loved 'winding' up his close friends and acquaintances. His remains were buried in Castlemacadam Cemetery after Requiem Mass in St Patrick's Church, Avoca, on Saturday celebrated by Fr Eamonn Crossan, assisted by three other priests. His passing id deeply mourned by his devoted wife Margaret; son John; three brothers, Sean, Terence and Joseph; three sisters, Maureen, Breda and Claire, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
