Wicklow's John Keenan admits that it is an honour to be named the referee for this year's All-Ireland MHC final.

Limerick and Tipperary will do battle in the decider on Sunday, September 4th at Croke Park and this will be the Wicklow whistle blower's first All-Ireland final.

Keenan has been on the inter-county circuit for a number of years now and has worked his way up through the ranks.

He admitted to the Wicklow People that it has been an emotional time for him and his family following the death of his mother recently.

"It's been an emotional few days to be honest," said John who was informed of the decision last Monday.

"It's been a rollercoaster given what happened last weekend and then to get the call on Monday. It's a huge honour for me, for my family, and for my club and for the county I suppose.

"I've put the work in over the last few years and I have been on standby for the last two All-Ireland minor hurling finals and I was starting to wonder if my time had passed but I was delighted to get the call, absolutely delighted."
