Fergal Ogs club notes

May 23, 2016

U8's/U10's - Our week got off to a flying start on Monday when our U8's and U10's football teams travelled to Kilcoole for a rearranged Go Games fixture. Our U8's faced off against Newtown, while our U10's played the host club. Both teams partook in competitive matches with the three clubs involved being very evenly matched with very little separating the sides. From our U8's, Joshua Temple was one of the stand out performers, scoring a couple of cracking goals. Also in fine form was Evan O'Neill, while the rest of the team of Brandon Mitchell, Natalie Cymerkiewicz, Theo McKenna, Szymon Siwczok and Michael Martin all contributed to an impressive Fergal Ógs performance on the night.
Our U10's had a panel of 14 players on the night with numbers at that age group continuing to rise. They played two matches against two Kilcoole teams and gave a very good account of themselves against both sides, with the host club being stronger on the night. Worthy of a special mention are Cian Egan and Laura Higgins who worked tirelessly at the back to stop Kilcoole attacks and win ball. The Berkley brothers, Daniel and Robert made their return and were relentless, covering every blade of grass on the pitch, while Megan Keogh created scoring chances with some fantastic passes.
Well done to all the team of Caitlin Egan, Cian Egan, Laura Higgins, Danielle Doyle, Dennis Vickers, Mikolay Laczyk, Finn Flanagan, Elly Moorehouse, Megan Keogh, Daniel Barkley, Robert Berkeley, Adam Murray, Adam Windsor and Nikola Vuletic.
Both teams will be travelling to Kilcoole again next week, when they'll take on the host club in a hurling contest.
Men's Hurling - Our men's hurling team were due to play St. Patrick's on Wednesday in the junior league but the match was rearranged to be played on Monday 23rd in Wicklow Town.
Men's Football - Our men's football team played host to Avondale on Thursday in Ballywaltrim Park. Coming off the back of their win against Kilcoole in the week prior, the team were brimming with confidence heading into the tie and this was evident when they came flying out of the traps in the opening minutes, not waiting long before finding their first scores, courtesy of a brace of points by Gavin Harris, the first from play and the second from a close range free. The bright start seemed to catch Avondale off guard and they responded hastily, not letting themselves drift any further behind, gaining posession of the ball and working the ball down the wings  to score their first points, levelling the tie at 2 points a piece. Avondale pressed on ahead with the game starting to be played in the Fergal Ógs half and were clinical in taking their points when given the time and space. 15 minutes into the tie, they found themselves 3 points ahead, and with their domination of the high ball contests, they won their fair share of Fergal Ógs goal kicks, and 20 minutes in, found the back of the home sides net for their first goal. Fergal Ógs fought back with Gavin Harris sending another free over the Avondale bar, while an impressive run from Cormac Kelly ended with his first point and Fergal Ógs fourth.  Avondale secured 4 more points before the hafttime break, with a halftime score of 1-9 to 0-4.
Avondale furthered their lead in the early stages of the 2nd half scoring another goal. 11 points behind, Fergal Ógs found it difficult to get near the Avondale goal with the visitors forcing them to shoot from distance. Aaron Kane made some brilliant runs down the wing, while there was also some good give and go football being played in the opponents half, but unfortunately the team weren't clinical enough in taking their scoring chances with a few wides letting Avondale off the hook on occasions.
When Fergal Ógs received a free just outside the box, the attempt on goal sailed just over the cross bar for Gavin Harris fourth point.
The point was followed by two more, with Ronan Twohig and Mark Doyle getting their names on the score sheet, both of them scoring from tight angles. Down the opposite end of the field, Avondale responded to Fergal Ógs spell of dominance with another goal which killed the game off as a contest and added a flurry of points to their tally before full-time, for a final scoreline of Fergal Ógs 0-7 Avondale 3-17.
The teams next match will be an away trip to Newtown next Thursday.
U12's - Our U12's hurling team played Eire Óg Greystones on Saturday. A cracking game of hurling was had. Fergal Ógs made the better start,   with Lance Wilde and Oisin Allen winning the midfield battle and driving the ball forward to Cian Byrne at half-forward who cut inside his marker, and drove the ball over the bar from distance for his sides opening score. Eire Óg launched the ball into their full forwards but Rhys Wilde and Jack Allen were first to many of the balls and sent them back up the field. Fergal Ógs scored their second point when Lance Wilde found his range after a couple of earlier wides, and blasted the ball over to put the Bray side up by 2 points. Much credit must be given to Ryan Fegan and Pearse O'Keeffe at half back, who broke down many attacks and eased the pressure on the full backs. They turned defence into attack, moving the ball out to the wings for the oncoming Fergal Ógs runners. Eire Óg scored their first point courtesy of a free and followed it up with another point from a 65 to level the tie. Ross McAteer made some impressive puck outs between the posts, while Jake Peare was in the thick of the action alongside Byrne, at half-forward and was unlucky not to bag a goal for himself, being denied by an impressive save by the Eire Óg goalkeeper. Fergal Ógs scored their third point when Lance Wilde batted a high ball down to Oisin Allen, who shifted the ball out wide into the hands of Cian Byrne, who drove down the wing and scored from a tight angle. There were some impressive play from Shane Buta in the full forward line who battled for every ball and kept the full back under pressure while Saoirse O'Hanlon and Eleanor Gilmore pulled on any ball that came near them with their eyes fixed on the Eire Óg goal. Cian Byrne secured another point before halftime courtesy of some brilliant link up play between himself and Oisin Allen, with the halftime score reading; Eire Óg 0-2 Fergal Ógs 0-4.
In the 2nd half Eire Óg started to win more ball, and scored their first goal from a fantastic close range strike to put themselves ahead. They quickly followed it with another goal from a tight angle,  giving themselves a 4 point lead. Fergal Ógs fought back with Lance Wilde launching a couple of impressive pucks into the Eire Óg goal mouth, only to find the opposing teams full backs.
Eire Óg looked to further their lead but were stopped in their tracks by some superb hooking and blocking by Ryan Fegan and the Allen brothers. A Fergal Ógs goal opportunity presented itself when Oisin Allen found Shane Buta out wide, who caught the ball in hand, and laid it off for an oncoming Jake Peare, whose strike was saved again by the Greystones keeper. A frustrating 2nd half from a Fergal Ógs point of view saw Eire Óg claim the victory by full-time. Much credit must be given to the Fergal Ógs team for a terrific performance.
The teams next match will be a football tie, at home against Kilcoole on Monday 23rd.
