Arklow Geraldine Ballymoney's GAA club notes

May 23, 2016

Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney celebrated the opening of their new Ballymoney Clubhouse on Monday 16 May 2016.  A huge crowd gathered to celebrate the special occasion. The proceedings began with Club President Fr Liam blessing the building, followed by John Horan Chairman of Leinster Council and Martin Coleman County Chairman cutting the ribbon to welcome everyone into the new Clubhouse.  The guests took some time to view the new clubhouse and facilities before sitting down for dinner. Ray Menton who acted as MC for the evening introduced the County Chairman Martin Coleman who congratulated the club on their achievements both on and off the field and wished the club every success in the future.  John Horan Leinster Council Chairman complimented the club on their development and assured them of the support of the Provincial Council.  Club Chairman John Murphy thanked everyone for their input into the development and acknowledged that without the support of so many volunteers it would not have been possible.  He also went on to thank the Department of Sports, Department of Social Protection, Arklow Municipal Authority and Leinster Council for their support.  He acknowledged the input from Shelton Gun Club into the project.  Mr Sylvester Bourke Mayor of the Arklow Municipal Authority congratulated the club on their achievements, and he was delighted to have been part of the local authority, which supported the project. Other speakers included Andy O Brien Wicklow Central Council and Leinster Council Victor O Shaughnessy.  A special presentation was made to Gillian Byrne for all her efforts and hard work during the project.

The Junior Ladies travelled to Blessington on Friday night for their final competitive game before exams & championship. Fourteen made the journey on a terrible night to play the game.  Eve Rogers was our stand in goalkeeper for the first half and did a terrific job and played centre back in the second half and played excellent.  The defence made up of Zoe Tackas,  Caoilfhinn Kavanagh, Becky Birmingham, Emily Mitchell, Kayleigh Earls and Aoife O'Reilly made life super difficult for the Blessington forwards and it reflected on the scoreboard as they only managed one score for the whole game and their link up play with the midfielders of Emer Curran and Doireann Kavanagh set up many attacks.  Doireann and Emer covered an enormous amount of ground and set up many scoring opportunities for the forwards with Doireann converting two points from play.  The forwards consisted of Aoife Murphy, Roisin O'Reilly,  Rebecca O'Sullivan, Grace Hurley and our Spanish debutant Tania Gonzalez Rubin put an impressive 3-13 on the scoreboard.Their running off the ball, link up play and finishing was super to watch. Final score AGB 3-15 Blessington 1-0.  Well done Ladies.

AGB U12 Girls Division 4 team travelled to Carnew on Tuesday evening. A tough game in tricky conditions against a strong Carnew team saw the girls suffer their first defeat in the league.

On Tuesday evening AGBs' U16 Girls took on St. Pats in the league at the Pearses Park venue. The girls made a strong start, creating many chances before moving into a 1-1 lead. St. Pat's were quick to reply, scoring their first goal with a long range effort.  With both teams working hard in a very tight match, it was the AGB girls who went in at the break leading by 3 points. Again in the 2nd half, the AGB girls started the stronger working some excellent scores, but this St Pat's team simply refused to go away and continued to work very hard to reduce the deficit. It was a very exciting game full of end to end football and the girls really had to dig deep to see off the opposition.  Credit to both teams, this was a great contest with both teams working their socks off right from the throw, in to the final whistle. The AGB  girls eventually won out and completed a league double over St Pats with a final score of 3-5 to 2-1.

AGBs Senior Ladies team had a great performance from a young team who came out on top against an experienced Kilnarein side on a score line of 3-10 to 2-6 in a friendly  in Kilnarein. Particular recognition to Eve Rogers who went in goals at short notice for an injured Linda Dempsey and played a stormer. Congrats to Caoilfhinn Kavanagh who played her first senior match and did great alongside her 16s team mates Emer Kelly, Rebecca O Suillivan and Anne Marie Keegan.

AGBs Intermediate Team travelled to Aughrim on Tuesday to  play Aughrim and won with a score of 0-15 to 0-6.

Well done to the U8 and U10 boys who travelled to Aughrim for a Blitz on Saturday morning.  Excellent displays of football were on show from both teams.
