Long serving Wicklow defender Alan Byrne has informed the county senior football management team that he will not be making himself available for next year's campaign.

Byrne has opted to hang up his boots after a long career spanning over a decade and included success in the Tommy Murphy Cup and their NFL Division 4 win.

Wicklow GAA chairman Martin Coleman hailed the Annacurra player's contribution to the Garden County over the years.

"There is no doubt Alan will be remembered long into the future," Coleman told the Wicklow People. "He always gave his best and there is no doubt in my mind that he would have graced any football team in the country.

"On behalf of all Wicklow Gaels I thank Alan and wish him every success in the future. I look forward to watching him in the coming years as he continues to line out with his club Annacurra."
