Fergal Ogs club notes

July 13, 2015

Men's Football
On Saturday 4th, our men's footballers played Stratford-Grangecon in their opening tie of the championship. They struggled to get into the game in the 1st half and were caught cold by a few early Stratford-Grangecon scores. As the half progressed, Fergal Ógs started to find some form and opened their scoring account, courtesy of a couple of well taken points and a goal by Gavin Harris and Cormac Kelly. Stratford-Grangecon took advantage of a few misplaced Fergal Ógs passes, regaining possession on each occasion, working their way through the Fergal Ógs defensive lines, and adding to their scoring tally. They found the back of the net just before half-time, giving them a four point lead heading into the 2nd half.
Fergal Ógs made a couple of tactical changes at half-time and came out far stronger in the 2nd half. Aaron Kane started to cause havoc on the right wing while Cameron Griffin and Barry O'Brien settled into the game and started to win their individual battles. Jamie Curran made a few clever runs, creating time and space for himself just beyond the 20m line, which all combined, started to put pressure on the Stratford-Grangecon defenders. Soon enough Fergal's took hold of the game and the four point lead was quickly erased. The team took confidence from their good start to the 2nd half and pressed on ahead, adding another two goals to their tally. Stratford-Grangecon found it hard to find a response to this resurgence from the Bray men and Gavin Harris all but secured the victory when he added another couple of scores to his own personnel tall late on. Any Stratford-Grangecon chances in the dying minutes were cut out by some superb defending by Ronan Twohig and Chris Carroll, who had both performed well throughout the contest.
The match ended Fergal Ógs 3-10 Stratford-Grangecon 1-8. Well done to all the players and the management. Their next championship match will be against Kiltegan, while their next fixture will be in the Schweppes Cup next Thursday @ Schools Road.

Men's Hurling
Our junior hurling match v Emmets was postponed. The team will be playing Glenealy next Friday.

U14s
Our U14's girls footballers played St. Patrick's @ Schools Road last Thursday. They knew going into the game that a win in this tie would see them crowned as league champions. They got off to a flying start, immediately taking the game to St. Pats from early on. There were season best performances from Daina Moorehouse, Alannah McEvoy and Nicole Keogh, not to mention the vital shifts that the rest of the girls put in. The match was a cagey affair in the 1st half with scores being traded, with neither side being able to mount a significant lead.  A goal scored by Trinity Doyle was matched by a well worked St. Pats goal down at the factory end. In the 2nd half Fergal Ógs were the stronger side and looked to have a bit of extra pace in their side which started to make all the difference. Alannah McEvoy and Daina Moorehouse worked well together in the middle, creating scoring chances for the forwards. Alannah scored a couple of goals which were quickly followed by further scores, both under and over the bar. The girls fitness held them in good stead as they battled for every ball right to the end.  When the referee blew the final whistle, there were great scenes of celebration as the girls had secured the win and the league title. Congratulations to all the team and to Olivia Maher, Conor Britton and Mary Doyle who have been managing the girls in recent years and without whom, the league title wouldn't have been possible. We must thank all the spectators who cheered on the girls on the night. Roll on the championship!

U8s and U10s
Our U8's/U10's competed at a football blitz in Newcastle on Friday. They played against the host club and Ashford. There were great performances from Cian Byrne, Adam Murray and the Allen twins.

Other Club News
We must give a huge Go raibh maith agat to the ESB, who donated a very generous grant to the club. We must also thank our own Cormac Kelly who made the whole thing possible.

We'll be holding our annual club golf tournament in September. Further details to follow.
