Blessington GAA Notes

June 29, 2015

Senior Notes:

Intermediates - Campus Oil Div 1A football league Blessington at home to Dunlavin on Thurs 25 was an exciting game full of twists. Blues started well, but after 15 mins had only one point on the board when Thomas Davis lopped Barry Behan in the in the Blessington goal. However, instead of pushing on, Dunlavin did not score for the rest of the half and a Barry O'Donovan inspired Blessington (he secured 3 from play) went in to lead 0-6 to 1-1 at half time. On the resumption, Dunlavin kicked 4 points in a row and looked set for victory, however, the Blues stayed in the game and were still two points down when Eoin Murtagh put Dunlavin 2 up with 5 mins to go. Blessington then proceeded to miss a penalty when sub Conor Ryan was pulled down and then Conor kicked a 14 yard free wide. Kevin Foster amazingly kicked his 2nd point of the game to reduce to one and with nerves of steel minor Conor Ryan kicked the leveller from 35yads on the 30th minute. Thomas Davis had one last chance to win it but drove wide. Blessington first point of the league. Final score Blessington 0-10 Dunlavin 1-7. Scorers for Blessington: Barry O'Donovan 0-3, Eoin Devlin 0-3, Kevin Foster 0-2, Robert Pender 0-1, Kyle Geraghty 0-1.

Juvenile Notes:

Féile Peil na nOg - Well after months of planning, organising, delegating, baking, making and all that goes with organising a Feile in Blessington is now all over.  Blessington GAA hosted a boys team from Ardnaree Sarsfields, Ballina, Co Mayo and girls team from Glencar Manor, Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim. The weather just about held up for us and there was a slight shower on Sat during our Cup quarter final game. On Fri 26 Jun in Blessington GAA the boys played Ballinderry Shamrocks GAA (Derry). All was level at half time but Ballinderry came out and went on a rampage of goals. Final score was Blesso 1-2  Ballinderry 4-5. Next up was Shamrocks and Blessington led 6-2 to 0-0 at half time. Shamrocks came out of the traps and scored a goal minutes into the second half. Blesso had nothing to worry about as they went on to win by a big margin. Final score 6-5 to 1-1. On Sat morning Blessington faced our visiting team Ardnaree Sarsfields. Ardnaree had a win and a draw under their belt and Blessington had a win and a loss so the Blues needed to win this match to get into the Cup at home or otherwise it was to Hollywood for the Shield quarter final. This was to be Blesso's best match of the year and all the training since 1 Feb kicked in and the lads put in a class performance. At half time they led 2-5 to 0-1. Again Ardnaree came out to win and scored 1-2. Blesso held their nerve and went on to score a further 5 points to win 2-10 to 1-3 and went forward to the Cup quarter final at home. Our luck ran out in this game as Newry Shamrocks steamrolled their way to the Semi Final beating Blesso 0-2 Newry Shamrocks 4-2.

The girls had to travel to Killanerin (Wex) on the Fri evening to play St Treas, Ballymaguigan (Derry) and were beaten 5-5 to 0-0. They then faced Killanerin (Wex) and lost 5-4 to 0-1. On Sat 27 at 11am the  girls played their visiting team Glencar Manor and were again beaten 0-0 to 5-4. The girls had to travel to Ferns Centre of Excellence to play in the quarter final of the shield v Gusserane-O'Rahillys where they were again unlucky and were beaten 1-5 to 0-1.

Hard luck to our visiting team Ardnaree beaten in the Shield Semi Final 4-5 to 1-1 in Ballinakill today. Great achievement to get there. Our visiting girls headed home to Leitrim early on Sun AM as they could go no further in the competition. Safe journey home and great to have met you all. We hope you enjoyed your visit to Blessington & Wicklow.

Many thanks to everyone who helped make this Feile one to remember for our kids and all the kids who came to play in our grounds over the weekend. There were many compliments on how well everything was run. When the call went out everyone rallied and no matter what job anyone had it was all part of the big wheel which was Feile 2015. The town and pitch were decked out in the Blue and White and all stops were pulled out to ensure all went to plan. Many thanks to Dunnes Stores for their sponsorship of €5000 and to MSL Group who sponsored the girls and boys jerseys. There were some private donations received and a very successful racenight was organised which helped towards the cost of hosting such a major event. The lads and girls did themselves and the club proud. They stood tall and proud and gave it their all and that is all anyone can ask. They have made friends and memories which they will carry with them for years to come. Some may get to do it all again next year! Thanks again to everyone who helped out in any way.
