Wicklow referee John Keenan

Wicklow intercounty referee John Keenan was the victim of a violent assault after a club game on Saturday evening.

Wicklow County Board will launch an investigation into the sickening incident which occurred at the end of the intermediate football championship clash of Baltinglass and Stratford-Grangecon in Hollywood.

According to The Irish Independent, Keenan - who has been included on this year's referees panel for the All-Ireland senior hurling championship - was headbutted on the nose as he made his way through the crowd to the changing room after sounding the final whistle.

The match official was left bloodied and shaken by the assault. Baltinglass had won the match by four points.
