St. Patricks club notes

November 03, 2014

We had a good day in Arklow on Sunday last with our hurlers adding two pieces of silverware to wrap up the year for the club. At 12 noon the Seniors played their 3rd game in 6 days in the Billy Byrne Cup final against Arklow Rocks. We had our replay under lights against Eire Og on Wednesday evening where we played well to come out on top on a scoreline of 0-15 to 2-4, with good displays from Wayne Farrell, Brian Coen, Chris Kavanagh, Andy O' Brien and John Connors. On Sunday perhaps all the games caught up and we never hit top form against a determined Rocks side, and just did enough to win on a scoreline of 0-13 to 0-10. Best for Pats were Wayne Farrell, Sean O' Callaghan, and Andy O' Brien.

Pride of place goes to Pat Stapleton and Willie Fahys Junior B's who with an ideal blend of youth and experience (you know which camp you're in!), came out on top by 1-9 to 1-8 in the county final against Avondale. A second half comeback with the "Shefflinesque" Conor Fahy deadly accurate from placed balls and players like Ta O' Brien, Ricky Quinn, John O' Neill, Gary "Tony Doran" Deehan, Eoghan O' Mahony and Johnny Carton taking the game to the opposition we turned it around. Well done to everybody in what was our first year since resuming adult hurling to take part in the junior grade, on marking the return with success. A number of our Junior players have gotten valuable experience this year and minor players like Robin Mooney, Peter Dickenson, George O' Brien, and Terry Healy will be better armed to push themselves forward for consideration on the Senior team next year. Pat Stapleton put the disappointment of being overlooked for the Tipperary Managers job next year behind him to plot the changes with Willie Fahy that turned the game around.

Our u14 hurlers were beaten in the "A" Shield Final on Sunday morning in Dunbur by Cill Cholm Gaeil a Kilccole / Eire Og / Kilmac / Enniskerry team. After trailing by 2 points at half time, the concession of 2 goals midway through the second half meant we were playing catch up. A number of these players are underage next year, and the physically stronger team won out on the day. Many thanks to Jim O' Brien and Jason Carey for all their hard work with this group.

Best wishes to Leona Franey our Ladies PRO who heads off on her travels to Australia. No doubt she will be keeping an eye on all the Pats results, and may even play a bit of gaelic over there. Two other international travellers are Paul Earls and Tom Ryan who are taking a few months out to travel, but we are assured that Gary Jameson has provided them with personal fitness programmes to keep them ticking over.
