"Too many knockers" - Murphy

Outgoing Wicklow senior football manager Harry Murphy says people are too quick to criticise footballers.

Due to work commitments, the Rathnure clubman decided last week to step down after three years at the Garden County helm. He says the players need to be afforded more respect:

"There are too many knockers," Murphy notes in The Wicklow People. "There are people that have probably never paid into Aughrim and they're running the lads down.

"They don't go to matches and they judge a game on hearsay. And then they wonder why young lads aren't playing.

"How many lads are slipping through the net because they're being looked after better in other sports?

"People and papers don't seem to think that these young lads are reading stuff and they're giving up their lives and they're just being ran down.

"Every time the team is being ran down, they're all part of the team. They just need to be respected more."
