The organisers behind the Professor Hollywood Cup game have thanked everyone who helped raise €41,109.51 for the cancer units in St Luke's and St James's hospitals.

A charity football match was organised back in May by former patients of the two hospitals.

The match was the brainchild of Richard Poole from Portlaoise, who captained the St Luke's side, and he was aided and abetted by Wicklow footballer John McGrath from Baltinglass who led out the St. James's team.

Brian Cody managed St Luke's while Mick O'Dwyer took charge of St James's for the novel game which was played in O'Moore Park.

As well as raising funds for the two hospitals, Richard and John wanted to send out the message that "There is life after Cancer".

Today they tweeted: "Thank you to everyone who helped us raise an amazing €41,109.51 for #cancerunits in #StLukes & #StJames #lifeaftercancer #gaa #Cancer".
