Former Wicklow footballer Austin O'Malley says investment is needed to maximise the county's chances of success.
O'Malley believes that only investment in player welfare can enable Wicklow to keep up with the Joneses in a sport that has become professional in all but name:
"From a player's perspective and having gone through it, you're looking to have the best of everything: resources, strength and conditioning, access to nutrition, the right medical care and all that sort of thing," the former Garden County and Mayo star told The Wicklow People.
"Those are things that definitely need to be invested in. Wicklow aren't alone in that - there are a lot of counties maybe in Division Three or Four that maybe need to address things like that if they're really serious about elevating themselves and kicking on.
"You have got to look at those things and you have got to create an environment for success. That takes investment; that takes money; that takes an awful lot of qualified people and expertise, but that's what's needed. And you need that at every level."
