John Tierney, Main Street, Rathdrum who passed away recently was a man of many parts. Born on a small farm in County Cavan 90 years ago with a family of five brothers and two sisters. John, who became an accomplished chemist , set up his pharmacy business in Rathdrum in the mid-50s which has provided a comprehensive service for over half a century. He was a highly respected member of his profession and by the wider Health Service. His quiet, courteous personality was always encouraging for his patients.
John's wife Vera was a native of County Waterford was also a chemist and played an integral role in the business. Sadly she passed away fifteen years ago.
Fr. Brian O'Reilly, who celebrated Funeral Mass in Rathdrum Parish Church, said in the course of his homily that it was a pleasure to visit John each month in recent years. He felt it was a courageous venture to set up a pharmacy in Rathdrum in the 1950's in poor times and he said John was a man of great faith and had a life-long devotion to the Rosary.
John Tierney (Junior) recalled many of his father's qualities including his sporting accolades. John represented his native county in minor football and won a County Dublin Championship with St. Vincent's and he also spoke of his Dad's love of boxing.
He also referred of his commitment to the community. He was a founder-member of Rathdrum Development Association and was closely associated with the fishing and rugby clubs.
Sympathy is extended to his sons, daughters, grandchildren, extended family and friends. Among the large attendance were many of his relatives and friends from Cavan. Burial took place in Rathdrum cemetery. May he rest in peace.
