Robert will be sadly missed

The entire Blessington area was deeply saddened at the news of the recent death of Robert Hennessy. Following a long illness, faced with the courage of someone far older than his 20 years, Robert passed away in the loving care of the Cystic Fibrosis team of Oak Ward, Tallaght Hospital on May 12.

The only child of Tom and Helen Hennessy, Robert was born and raised in Eadestown, Co Kildare. He attended St. Mary's National School in Blessington before going on to the CBS Secondary School in Naas. An intelligent young man, Robert had secured himself a place at NUI Maynooth but, sadly, was unable to take it up. Robert had a great love of sports from an early age. He played Juvenile football up to U12 at Blessington GAA Club where he was very well thought of and established himself as a handy little player in the corner forward position. Robert later developed a huge interest in golf and played with Blessington Golf Society and Craddockstown Golf Club. He had a fantastic drive- one any pro would be envious of. He got to meet his idol, Padraig Harrington, who also became his friend. Robert had the great pleasure of visiting Padraig's home, while Padraig came to visit him in hospital last Christmas.

Like his father, Robert also had an eye for the horses and proved himself to be a very skilful punter. A funny and witty young man, Robert was always full of hope for his life ahead. He was an inspiration to all young people as he simply accepted his illness, Cystic Fibrosis and never asked 'why me?' Tragically, Robert had been called over to England on three occasions to get a lung transplant but on each occasion the lungs found not to be a match. A well known and brave young man, Robert's funeral on Sunday, May 15 at the Church of Our Lady in Blessington was a testament to the popular young man that he was and his passing has left a huge void for his family to rest in Eadestown cemetery. Robert is missed greatly by his parents, Tom and Helen, Grandmother Josie, uncles Arthur, Jerry, Martin, Ronan, Dermot, Seamus, Thomas and Gerard, aunts Rena and Siobhan, cousins, relatives and a large circle of friends. May he rest in peace.
