The GAA community in Wexford has been plunged into mourning after a 14-year-old girl collapsed and died during an underage football match yesterday evening.

Secondary school student Ciara Ryan died as a result of a suspected brain haemorrhage while playing for Kilanerin in Gorey. She had complained of feeling unwell before fainting.

Despite the best efforts of a paramedic who delivered first aid on the scene and a doctor who arrived minutes later, Ciara was later pronounced dead at Wexford General Hospital.

Sympathy is extended to her family at this difficult time.
