Wexford's Brian Malone sustained a bruised larynx as a result of a high tackle from Fergal Doherty on Saturday.

The Derry midfielder picked up a yellow card for the 18th-minute challenge, which Model County manager David Power described as "horrendous".

Speaking to The Irish Daily Star, forwards coach Mattie Forde explained: "He took a pass and when he went facing the goal he was met with a fairly hefty shoulder. Brian came in at half time and I seen him talking to the doctor.

"The doctor wasn't too keen on letting him back out. After having a chat with him, he couldn't kinda breathe properly.

"His voice was impaired and every time he went for a drink of water, he wasn't able to swallow. So we said it wasn't worth it and we took him off.

"I was talking to him on Sunday night and his throat - his larynx, it's called - is bruised. But hopefully he'll make a full recovery."
