Fitzhenry opposed to penalty change

Wexford great Damien Fitzhenry is hoping delegates at this weekend's GAA Congress in Cavan give the thumbs down to the one-v-one hurling penalty.

The long-serving former Model 'keeper, not to mention penalty expert, believes the Hurling 2020 committee's proposal gives an unfair advantage to the penalty taker.

"I used to take two or three steps in and then strike but fellas were taking six or seven steps and then hitting the ball with real power," he said to The Irish Independent.

"As a goalkeeper, I'm saying it's unfair. As a penalty-taker, I feel you shouldn't miss."

It looks as though Fitzhenry might be left disappointed after the vote, however, as his own county are due to support the change along with other strong hurling counties such as Tipperary, Cork, Clare, Waterford, Dublin and Galway.

As of now, just three counties -  Limerick, Westmeath and Carlow - have mandated their delegates to vote against it.
