Wexford hurlers league ambitions have suffered a set-back with the news that star forward Conor McDonald will be confined to the sidelines for the early rounds.

McDonald was forced off with an ankle injury midway through the second-half of UCD's Walsh Cup clash against his native county on Sunday and an x-ray yesterday revealed that the full-forward suffered a chipped bone.

"Conor has a chipped bone in the ankle," manager Liam Dunne confirmed to The Irish Independent.

"A plaster has been applied and he's on crutches at the moment.

"We'll have him looked at by an ankle specialist to ensure he gets the professional treatment. Hopefully we will have him seen by a specialist to-day (Monday) or Tuesday at the latest."
