Wexford SFC: Castletown dethrone holders

Wexford's Redmond Barry

Castletown ended St. Martin's reign as Wexford senior football champions with a dramatic 2-7 to 1-9 quarter-final victory at Bellefield.

Goals from Jody O'Shaughnessy and Peter Maxwell proved decisive as the north Wexford club's greater team-work saw them past the challenge of a Martin's side that relied heavily on county star Ciaran Lyng for scores.

Castletown's opponents in the semi-final will be Gusserane who cruised to a 3-14 to 1-10 win over neighbours Horeswood. Jamie Cooney and Sean Ryan scored 1-3 each for the winners.

St. Anne's and Shelmaliers will contest the SHC final next Sunday and they will also face off in the SFC semi-final following their respective quarter-final victories at the weekend. An early Redmond Barry goal helped championship favourites St. Anne's to a 1-12 to 0-9 victory over St. Fintan's, while Eoghan Nolan and Craig McCabe raised green flags in Shels' 2-8 to 0-8 defeat of Sarsfields.
