"You want them to play the game and not the occasion"

Rathgarogue-Cushinstown captain Matthew Cody raises the Leinster JFC Cup at Pairc Tailteann.

Rathgarogue-Cushinstown midfielder Matthew Cody says he and his team mates won’t be getting “overawed” by Croke Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Wexford junior champions will be stepping out ion the hallowed turf for the first time this weekend when they take on Kerry’s Na Gaeil in the All-Ireland club JFC final (throw-in 3.15pm).

Speaking at this week's AIB GAA Media event for the intermediate and junior club finals, Cody says he’s confident the occasion won’t get to them.

“There is huge excitement, none of us have ever played there,” he said.

“It’s sort of on the bucket list of every GAA player to play at Croke Park, so it’s a dream come true to set foot on it. But we don’t want lads to get there and say ‘oh Jesus, it’s Croke Park’ and get overawed by it, you want them to play the game and not the occasion.

“We’re obviously trying to get a result. I suppose when the dust settles after the game, that’s when all of this will sink in.”

The Allianz Football and Hurling Leagues are back this weekend and so is the Hogan Stand Match Tracker. Join us on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon for live score and updates from the opening rounds.
