The death has taken place of former Leinster Council chairman and GAA presidential candidate Sheamus Howlin.

Shemus played with his local club St Martin's before earning a reputation as an outstanding administrator at club, county, provincial and national level.

He served as Leinster Council chairman from 2008 to '11 and ran for the GAA presidency in 2014, only to be defeated by Cavan's Aoghan O Fearghail. Sheamus was appointed chairman of the GAA's Insurance & Risk Management Committee by current GAA president John Horan earlier this year.

May he rest in peace.
