Westmeath - U21 club championship

I see quarter finals down for this weekend (home teams named first)
1. Athlone v St.Lomans 15/09/2017 20:00
2. The Downs v Tyrrellspass 16/09/2017 16:30
3. Milltownpass v Caulry 16/09/2017 16:30
4. Moate All Whites v Rosemount / Castledaly 16/09/2017 16:30

1 v 4 and 2 v 3 in semi finals.
I recall last year's champions The Downs winning with a young team as indeed were defeated finalists Rosemount / Castledaly.
Any other serious contenders ?

Possibly heading for a Downs vs Rosemount final .

I believe Moate refused to play Rosemount with their relegation play off scheduled for next weekend. Crazy and misguided stuff from Moate in my opinion. They wanted U21 put off until after play off. Sure The Downs, Athlone, Lomans and TPass all played U21 and are still in championship. Poor old County Board will get blamed. Granted I'm sure Moate have more U21 players than the senior sides but come on !

Disappointing to see Moate not field. Excuse on the clubs social media was that relegation play-off is next weekend. Some lad could get injured training this week and miss game as easily as get injured playing U21 match. Very unfair on Moate lads who are too old for minor and don't play with intermediate team, they get no football now! Very disrespectful to the competition.

Very poor out of Moate reckon it was more so the clipping they got last year from Rosemount/Castledaly and didn't want a repeat out of that so didn't field using the relegation playoff was just an excuse all young fit lads ,and The Downs and Athlone will be doing the same they didn't forfeit there games. Rosemount v The Downs final repeat of last year. The Downs are doing fantastic work at underage.

Yeah seems laughable to use that reason when some of the senior teams played this weekend, when they are out next weekend. But then to plaster all over there Facebook page blaming Rosemount and the Co Board, it made it even more embarrassing on them. From talking to some Castledaly people they try to pull the same stunt two years ago to get the original fixture changed because they were going to be missing a player, and then turned around and blamed Rosemount/ Castledaly, who to be fair didn't take the cup and re fixed the game. They were never going to make the same mistake this time. Repeat of last year's final I reckon , although Athlone will fancy Rosemount in the semi, The Downs have 90% of last year's team from what I hear still available this year so they should win but you never know.

Is there a B grade or are these the only U21 clubs?

Just the one 15 aside competition this year. I recall amalgamations were invited too but doesn't seem any entered except for Rosemount / Castledaly who are already together at underage. 14 teams participated according to the Westmeath website.

Give it a rest. The games aren't on during their lectures.

Agree jamsie. Students not being able to play because there at college is a new one. What next - farmers milking the cows?

U21 has been on in the harder months for as long as I can remember, think last year it was a small bit earlier but I remember playing a final in November. It's not ideal but don't really see any other time to play it off it's a strange age group, play it any earlier and you'll have clubs complaining about players getting burnt out so I don't really know what the solution is there, as bad as the county board is already there's not much they can do about u21

U21 final was in December last year I think. We're mid September & now at semi final stage which is good from a players point of view....not having to continue training halfway into the winter.
Looks like all club competitions will be well wrapped up by the end of October & apart from the mini debacle after the group stages I think the fixtures committee deserve some credit. I'm sure they'll learn from some of the issues this year.

Some man to find something wrong with everything in Westmeath GAA. Why not get involved and make things better?

Agree with Left Full, fixtures a good job overall save for the recent messing. Re U21, they are at semi final stage so just 3 games remain and will be played at weekends so shouldn't be an issue for students at all. Athlone's continued involvement in minor, U21, junior and senior might impact on the U21.
