Westmeath - New Senior Manager

why bother paying big expenses to an outside manager when a local could fail just as spectacularly

CB are afraid to appoint a local as then some awkward questions might be asked about finances, facilities and player development

It appears Dublin have a structure in place, I.e. Jim Gavin going from U21 to senior, Dessie Farrell going from minor to U21 and surely would be next in line to replace Gavin. Imagine having the foresight to coach/train/give Westmeath based coaches/managers the training, knowledge, and skills required to have a conveyor belt of coaches/managers lined up for the next 10 or 15 years.

Just got info from a reasonable reliable source that Magee the former dublin footballer and the oitgoing Wicklow manager has been offered the job. Hope for once this source is wrong because thats not a forward move unless they have paired him up with a local trainer who knows the players and how to coach

At this stage i reckon the county board are just looking to get anyone in. The new manager will have to start putting plans in place heading to the end of the year. Dont know much about Magee, apart from when he was over Wicklow. Has he managed anyone else? Its a step down from Cribbin i think, but maybe they are left with no choice. As someone mentioned earlier, if they got in a local coach it might help. But the new manager may want to bring in his own coach.

I assume that any recommended candidate will need to be ratified by the clubs at a county board meeting, the next one is fixed for Weds 27th Sept.

Magee organised a 3 year Sponsorship for our county in his last year as manager so he could get some funding for his team. He also arranged interviews for some players for jobs, got a couple of the players scholarships in Ucd all through his contacts as a Dub. He had 2 football coaches with him to help develop our players because we are so fare behind. The results might not of gone his way but it wasn't from the lack of coaching or game plan. Unfortunately it was more to do with the quality of players we don't have but he has given 22 championship debuts in 6 championship matches & over 30 league debuts in 3 league campaigns. Magee for what I could see did everything he could for the players to try & improve them on & off the field. I have read a few things on here about him, I felt it is very unfair. You should never judge a book by its cover.

we've better football coaches in the county who actually know what players are out there
I don't see the point in spending money on a lad to travel down to the county

Players, even at club level have more respect for a stranger. If they know him they will disregard him and if he is one of our own he will be accused, rightly or wrongly of favoring his own club men.

I dont see the problem with Magee. Its not like we have an abundance of talent at our disposal so if he is half decent and isnt gonna put the County under a mountain of debt i say go for him. You cant make a silk purse out of a sow's ear! We are in for a number of years at Div 3 & 4 level i'm afraid until some emphasis is put back into underage in this county.

Have it from a very reliable source that Colin Kelly is the name that will be put up for ratification next Wednesday

fine with that too! :-) Personally i dont think it really matters as its a 1 or 2 year job and we'll be back looking again. What i would be concerned about is what we do with underage in the meantime.

Everything Wicklowfan has said on here is exactly as it isn't. Seriously, this poster is clearly deluded. And that's coming from someone with actual knowledge of what he thinks he knows. Ask me which parts are complete untruths and I'll tell you but don't accept what he is saying as being anyway close to how things are
