Westmeath to 'retire' SHC Cup after 54 years

July 26, 2017

The celebrations begin for Raharney at Cusack Park Mullingar

This year's winners of the Westmeath senior hurling championship will be presented with a new cup for the first time in 54 years.

The Westmeath Examiner Cup was first presented in 1963 when Rickardstown, the club of the legendary John 'Jobber' McGrath defeated Castlepollard in the county final.

The editor and proprietor of the Westmeath Examiner, Nicholas Nally put the cup forward all those years ago and it has been used ever since.

The iconic cup currently resides in Raharney who won the county SHC last year, but it will now be placed in a display cabinet in Cusack Park.

However, the Westmeath Examiner will have its name associated with the new cup, continuing its long association with the county board.
