Seniors:
There were no league fixtures this past weekend so our seniors played Tulsk of Roscommon in a challenge in Páirc Chiaráin and came out on top on a scoreline of 1-17 to 0-18 after a competitive workout. League action resumes this weekend and both of our teams are away. In Division 1, the seniors travel to Mullingar on Friday night to take on St Loman's, throw-in at 8pm, while our juniors make the shorter trip to Mount Temple on Sunday morning to play Caulry in Division 4, throw-in at 11.30am.
Fixtures:
ACFL Division 1: Athlone v. St Loman's, Lakepoint Park (St Loman's), 8pm Friday March 3rd
ACFL Division 4: Athlone v. Caulry, Mount Temple, 11.30am Sunday March 5th
Westmeath:
Congratulations to the Westmeath under 21s who beat Meath in the opening round of the Leinster Championship and best of luck in the quarter-final against Dublin on Wednesday. Well done also to the county seniors who defeated Leitrim and best of luck to them also in their crucial game away to Waterford on Sunday.
Minor League Division 1:
Athlone 1-9 St. Loman's 0-6
The minor boys got their first league win of the season at home to St. Loman's in poor conditions last Tuesday evening. The first score of the game was hard to come by and didn't come until the 10th minute from a Lomans' free. A superb solo score by Mark Egan got the home side off the mark. This was followed by a point by Lomans and a free for Athlone, scored by Kieran Colclough. Colclough continued his 100% record from penalties in the 20th minute when he slotted to the corner of the net to raise the only green flag of the game, the penalty coming after a foul on JJ Offorjama. Enda Daly then got on the scoresheet to leave it 1-3 to 0-3 at half time.
Athlone played with the aid of a strong wind in the second half and put 3 great scores on the board, one from Colclough, and two, one off each foot from the skilful Benny Martin. However, to their credit, Lomans battled hard and scored 3 fine points of their own. Colclough, Martin and Egan rounded off the scoring to leave Athlone victorious on a score of 1-9 to 0-6.
John Duddy was superb in goal, pulling off a string of fine saves. James Finlass and Shane Allen held things together at the back, while JJ Offorjama and Luke Kelly were a constant thorn in the side of the visitors' defence. This was a hard fought win and the management of Eoin Jordan, Fergal Murray and Eamon Martin will be happy to get the first win of the season under their belts, although they know there is a huge amount of work to do with this talented squad.
Team: John Duddy, James Finlass, Diarmuid Martin, Patrick McGettigan, David Cleary, Shane Allen, Niall Doolan, Kieran Colclough (1-3), Anthony Johnson, Mark Egan (0-2), JJ Offorjama, Donagh Prendergast, Luke Kelly, Enda Daly (0-1), Benny Martin (0-3) Subs used: Aaron Forde, Joseph Devins, Kevin Cleary, Deba Okodugha, Patrick Ryan.
