Garrycastle GAA club notes

Launch of Coaching Plan

On Friday evening last the club's coaching committee had a very successful launch of their plan. Chairman of the group David O'Shaughnessy outlined the overall plan. He talked of the nursery programme, the underage coaching programme,  as well as plans for coach education. A management structure for each of the teams will be put in place with designated roles for each member of the group. Westmeath's GAA coaching officer, Eddie Bouabse, spoke to the meeting about the player pathway ie development of the player from nursery activity to a senior player. He emphasised skill development, concentrating on a small number of skills for each age group for younger players. He outlined the GAA's elearning resource, available online, where coaches can access a wealth of drills, conditioned games and activities, all designed to help player development. Former Garrycastle club and Galway hurling manager, Anthony Cunningham spoke about the upsurge in coaching plans in clubs around the country. He congratulated the club for its work on developing this plan. He talked about the need to stick to the plan and not to be diverted by disappointing days that will happen from time to time. He used Derry club, Slaughtneil, as an example of a club where good coaching had resulted in their teams winning three Ulster titles this year. Club chairman, Michael Mannion, thanked the speakers and everyone who had helped to put this event on, especially club minor chairman, Mark Redmond, who had done Trojan work.

Adult Football

The senior team had a very useful workout against Roscommon Gaels on Friday evening last, coming out on top by three points. Played without county players it gave the management a chance to get some game practice into the players and to look at some younger players.   League action resumes next weekend and the scheduled fixtures are as follows. On Saturday March 4th  at 15:30 the division team will play Mullingar Shamrocks in Springfield. On Sunday morning at 11.30 the division 3 team will play Killucan in Garrycastle and later that day at 3.30pm, also in Garrycastle,  our division 5 team will play Castledaly

Underage Football and Registration

The big kick off for the season arrives next Sunday for the nursery, under 8 and under 10 players (boys and girls). The football will start at 11am and continue to 12 noon. Registration and fitting for gear will be taking place in the clubhouse at the same time.

Sympathy

The club wishes to extend deepest sympathy to the Fuery family Iona Park on their recent bereavement.
