Ben Murray, Vilanstown, Gaybrook, Mullingar, County Westmeath

Everyone in our community was deeply shocked on the evening of the 31st of December last when the news emerged of young Ben Murray's untimely passing.

Ben was a great sportsman and was involved with Clonkill Hurling Club, The Downs Gaelic Football Club and Mullingar Rugby Club and, by all accounts, excelled at all games.

Ben was a member of the Under 14 Clonkill hurling team that were runners-up in the Westmeath Feile Final and subsequently competed in the National Feile competition in Portlaw, Waterford in 2016. The team reached the Semi-final of the Shield in this competition. Ben was a committed player and quickly made his mark with the club, commanding his position in the half back line. He could grab a ball from the sky and clear it upfield, using his height and natural ability to great effect.

Ben also lined out in the Kit Scally Memorial Cup, when the club played Collinstown, and he was delighted to win his first medal with Clonkill that day.

A very popular member of the panel, Ben always had a smile on his face, and he will be sadly missed by all his team mates, mentors and club members.

The Downs Football Club and Clonkill Hurling Club assembled at the The Downs GAA pitch on 2nd January with Ben's team mates and friends to try and offer some support to these young people who had lost their friend.

While Ben and his family are only with the club for a short time, they have been fantastic supporters of our activities and fund-raising ventures.

To Ben's Parents Alma and Boris, to his little brother Alfie to his grandparents, Breda and Peter Fennelly, Rita and Eva, and his many relations and friends, we extend our sincere condolences at this difficult time. Ben will be fondly remembered by everyone in Clonkill Hurling Club.

Stewart Mitchell Tupperaquill, Monilea, Mullingar, County Westmeath

On January 4th 2017, our community lost a gentleman.

Stewart Mitchell passed away after a battle with an illness fought with great courage and dignity.

Stewart Mitchell was a past player with Clonkill winning a Senior Championship in 1969 where he played at midfield. The Mitchell Family have always been great supporters of Clonkill Hurling and Stewart was very proud of his club.

To his wife Grainne, his mother Birdie, his sons Gareth, Andrew and Adam, his sister Sandra, his daughter in laws, Nollaig, Susan and Sinead, to his two grandchildren Holly and Peter we extend our sincere sympathy.

Lip Sync

The Club held a Big Fundraiser on the 28th of December last in the Mullingar Park Hotel - Lip Sync.

A lot of work went into this event and the hard work paid off with the show being a sell- out.

So many people made such a big effort for this event and we are eternally grateful to you all.

To the Contestants, where lip sync became their lives and they worked there family, work committements and socialising around the busy schedule we thank you so much for your hard work. It was a pleasure to deal with you.

To the Committee, this can be a testing job at the best of times, but each member of the committee, excelled in their posts.

To the Sponsors, for your generosity which was overwhelming, the continued support which we receive is appreciated.

We would encourage our community to support the Business which supported us.

Happy New Year

The Hurling Club would like to take this opportunity to wish all our supporters, members and friends a Very Happy and Peaceful New Year
